For culture & art lovers: TOP 5 places & activities in Jurmala

Art station Dubulti

This is the only modern art space in Europe that is located in a functioning railway station. The Dubulti Art Station is an excellent example of how to combine transport, cultural and public administration resources to make a unique art platform accessible to everyone. The Dubulti Station was built in 1977, and, according to the idea of its architect Igor Javein, it created associations with the rolling sea. In 2015, the station was fully renovated, which also made it possible to create a professionally-managed art gallery here.

Free admission.

House of Aspazija

House of Aspazija in Dubulti is the most unusual and the most beautiful museum in Jūrmala. It was the will of the poetess’ for this house to become a place to meet for writers, artists, photographers and other intellectuals from Riga, Jūrmala and Latvia. Various poetry recitals, concerts and talks take place here. The special atmosphere of House of Aspazija is created by music, art and history; the restored exhibition of the museum helps experience the spirit of the last century, via not only early 20th century household items and interiors, but also projected holograms and interactive educational games. It is a must see not only for Latvian poetry connoisseurs, but also for interior design lovers.

Free of charge entrance.

Dzintari concert hall

The Dzintari Concert Hall offers to enjoy concerts performed by world-famous musicians all year round. There are also music festivals of different genres taking place at the unique concert hall.  Especially during the summer season, when the open air great hall is open, many beautiful concerts are performed.

In addition, the Dzintari Concert Hall itself is a pearl of architecture on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The Dzintari Concert Hall complex has two halls. The smallest is an elegant 1930-ies neo-eclectic-style concert hall. The second hall is bigger and open-air. The harmony of nature and music combined with the outstanding work of architects, creates unforgettable impressions for both artists and audience.

Expressive wooden architecture in Jurmala

Wooden architecture is one of the distinguishing features of Jūrmala, in particular, quaint homes with decorative tower lets and glazed verandas. Wood was chosen as a building material for spa houses already in the mid-19th century, when summer holidaymakers began escaping the city to relax in Jūrmala. The special aesthetic of wood embodied the Neo-Classical, Art Nouveau and National Romantic motifs of that era. Today, new Functionalist-style constructions strive to join the longstanding tradition of wooden summer-home architecture.

The list of architectural monuments in Jurmala includes 408 buildings, of which 7 are sacral buildings - 3 Lutheran, 2 Catholic and 2 Orthodox churches. More than 4,000 buildings correspond to the historic building status in the city.

Almost on every street in Jurmala you will find at least a few architecture pearls. Therefore, in warmer weather, we recommend renting bikes at Hotel Jūrmala Spa and go on bike excursions to get a better impression of the magnificent Jurmala architecture.

Art gallery “Inner light”

Every painting created by Vitaly Yermolayev hides a secret of light inside it. The author himself calls this effect the ‘inner light’. His works sparkle under special lighting, and instead of the painting, the viewer sees something different, an initially hidden version. The artist has successfully combined his new ‘fluorescent’ technique with the best classic painting traditions. The shift from day-time to night-time on a painting can be very gradual, offering the viewer an enormous variety of transforming images.
